Fat and Not-So-Happy

A statement we all hear far too often is “fat and happy,” but what if I told you it doesn’t quite work like that. Many horses are overweight, but may as well be starved on paper. It doesn’t matter the quantity of forage (hay or pasture) you provide, if it is not meeting that horse's nutrient requirements. This is why horses may seem to have a good diet but can perform poorly such as low mobility or not building muscle, or have hoof issues such as founder or increased risks for navicular disease. Similarly, on the same diet, one horse may thrive, while another will struggle with their nutritional and performance levels. It is imperative to your horse's health to understand their nutritional requirements in order to feed them accurately and allow them to feel like their best selves.

*Please consult with your veterinarian or a nutritional expert before making changes to your horse's diet*
